Day 100 DIY!

Text

Alright, here we go. Day 100. I wanted to do something kind of special for this momentous occasion and I think this turned out awesome. I had one of these:

While these rubbermaid units are super handy, they have zero personality and show all of the junk that they tend to collect, which makes them a gigantic, cluttered, eyesore. Something had to be done. So I thought: “I’ll cover the drawers!”

I first thought paper, but then I realized that paper wouldn’t conform to the corners or look very neat. So I changed to fabric.

I ventured out to Fabricville and spent an hour or so perusing the fabric. I sort of had an idea in mind of what I wanted: a few fabrics that were different but coordinated. I took some cues from Sarah Richardson (HGTV reference) and her style when it comes to fabric mixing. I think the choices go very well together. I also picked up some flat lace that is about 1 inch wide.

So I took the drawers out, measured them, and then cut pieces of fabric to fit the front and two sides (left out the back - no need to waste fabric for that).

This is what the cuts look like (x4):

Then I cut the lace to size (mitered the cuts roughly) and busted out the Mod Podge! The key is to use the glue sparingly - thin coats are best. First the lace gets glued down lightly, then the small piece gets secured on top of that. Wait for about 10-15 minutes for that to dry up a bit and then have at ‘er with the big pieces, putting a thin coat of glue over the entire area. Lay the fabric (FACE DOWN!) on the glue and then go over the back of the fabric with the Mod Podge.

I made sure I left a little bit of fabric hanging over the edge (make allowances for this when you cut it), so that I could trim it down after.

Once they have all dried (overnight is probably best), cut off the excess fabric with a sharp pair of scissors, and voila!
